Irvine, California—Roland DGA has announced the addition of two new printers to its VersaSTUDIO Series of compact, easy-to-use, and affordable desktop products – the BN2-30, an eco-solvent printer/cutter with a maximum material width of 30 inches (736 mm), and the BD-12, a UV direct-to-object printer with a print bed of 12.2” x 8.3” (305 mm x 210 mm) that can accommodate items slightly larger than A4 in size. Both the BN2-30 and the BD-12 feature vibrant, detailed printing plus expanded work areas compared to current VersaSTUDIO models, enabling increased productivity and profitability.

The 30-inch BN2-30 offers outstanding print quality and precision contour cutting, making it ideal for the creation of graphics, photos, and text in any desired shape. While it has a small enough footprint for operation in print environments with limited space, the BN2-30 offers the imaging capabilities, integrated cutting functionality, and productivity needed to quickly produce high-quality T-shirt transfer graphics, yard signage, posters, stickers and labels, uniquely shaped displays, and more. The BN2-30 is designed to take full advantage of Roland DG’s high-quality Eco-Sol MAX 2 eco-solvent inks available in CMYK and White.

The BD-12 UV flatbed printer is designed for high-definition direct-to-object printing on a vast array of three-dimensional objects up to A4 size and four inches (102 mm) in height, such as smartphone covers, notepads, sports memorabilia, giftware, fashion accessories, and promotional items. Optional rotary devices are also available that allow users to print easily and effectively on cylindrical objects up to two inches (50 mm) in diameter, such as cosmetics and travel items. The BD-12 benefits from specially formulated EUV5 UV inks in CMYK and White that are compatible with a range of materials, from soft goods like fabric and leather to hard goods such as wood and plastics. Users can also take advantage of EUV5 clear ink to incorporate gloss or matte finishes and eye-catching special effects, including simulated 3D embossing, into their prints. An optional Primer ink is available as well, for better adhesion when printing directly on glass and metal objects.

“The introduction of these two versatile, affordable, and simple-to-use desktop printers expands and strengthens our VersaSTUDIO product lineup,” said Roland DGA’s Product Manager of Digital Print, Daniel Valade. “Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a company owner who wants to improve control and profitability by bringing outsourced production in-house, or an educational supervisor seeking to expose students to the latest STEAM technologies, these printers will increase your creative opportunities and help take your business or program to the next level.”

Both the BN2-30 and BD-12 are equipped with technologically advanced printheads that deliver high-resolution output and offer multiple print modes ideal for different applications, making it easy for anyone to achieve professional-quality results. These machines are also designed for simple operation and optimum convenience. Each device has only a single power button – all other functions are performed with the included Utility software, which features easy-to-understand icons and quick, intuitive access to menu items.

The BN2-30 and BD-12 also come standard with FlexiDESIGNER VersaSTUDIO Edition software that can be used for everything from design creation to printing, as well as VersaWorks 7 – Roland DG’s most advanced, user-friendly RIP software to date. VersaWorks 7, which now supports both Windows and macOS, is packed with powerful tools and features that help maximize print quality, improve efficiency, and increase productivity. With FlexiDESIGNER and VersaWorks 7 included, even those who have never used design and output software before can create the items they desire quickly and easily.

Users also have access to Roland DG Connect, a comprehensive cloud-based platform that enables print professionals to manage their entire print operations with a single app. Roland DG Connect provides you with a detailed understanding of your printers while keeping your devices running at peak performance, reducing downtime, and maximizing efficiency. It also puts everything you need to create, optimize, and grow – from real-time monitoring and business insights to inventory management tools and seamless support – at your fingertips.

The BN2-30 and BD-12 are priced to be affordable for first-time users. Both products are also backed up by comprehensive manufacturer warranties, and optional extended maintenance contracts are available for extra peace of mind.

Irvine, California—Roland DGA has announced the launch of the new TrueVIS™ Roland DG XG-640—a 64-inch, professional-level eco-solvent printer/cutter uniquely designed to help busy print operations achieve optimum image quality, productivity, and profitability.

Available now through authorized Roland DGA dealers, the XG-640 combines impressive print speeds and precise integrated contour cutting with unrivaled TrueVIS color and detail to deliver high-quality output faster and more cost-effectively than ever before. With output speeds up to two times faster than the leading solvent and latex systems, the XG-640 redefines expectations for performance in its class.

Since pioneering integrated print-and-cut functionality—technology that prints and automatically cuts graphics to any shape in one seamless process—more than 30 years ago, Roland DG has focused on continuous innovation. This commitment to constant improvement has culminated in the development of the new XG-640, which ushers in a whole new era of print/cut versatility, efficiency, and performance.

“The XG-640 is quite simply our fastest, most capable printer/cutter to date,” said Roland DGA Product Manager of Digital Print, Daniel Valade. “Incorporating our very latest digital imaging and cutting advancements, it allows print providers to handle a wide range of applications with unprecedented confidence. In addition to producing output that exceeds customer expectations, the XG-640’s ability to ramp up production while keeping running costs low can help any shop increase its bottom line. It’s an amazing device that pays for itself within a very short time period—everything after that is pure profit.”

For brilliant color and print accuracy, the XG-640 employs newly designed dual staggered printheads that eject finer ink droplets at higher densities. These state-of-the-art printheads, along with new high-speed data control functionality, enable the XG-640 to produce stunning prints at speeds of up to 819 square feet per hour.

The XG-640 takes full advantage of Roland DG’s new GBL-free, wide-gamut TR3 eco-solvent inks, which are available in a choice of configurations up to eight colors (CMYK, Lc, Lm, Or, and Gr). White ink printing is three-times faster and 1.3-times denser than with the TrueVIS VG3, ensuring excellent opacity for window graphics and base coats.

True Rich Color is a unique print setting that optimizes the potential of the XG-640 to create beautifully realistic graphics that combine vivid colors with neutral grays, smooth gradations, and natural skin tones. Users can now quickly select the ideal color setting, including more vivid color, deeper color, or softer color, depending on the desired graphic results.

The XG-640 boasts additional productivity enhancements for efficient, high-quality output, including automatic media set-up and take-up systems to ensure fast and stable throughput, a 7-inch color LCD touch-screen control panel, automated pinch rollers, perforated sheet cutting, a media gap adjustment function, and self-maintenance features.

“At a typical output volume, many shops see ROI on the XG-640 in less than six months,” Valade added. “That makes this next-generation inkjet a clear investment in long-term profitability.”

A powerful software package is also included with the XG-640. Roland DG’s latest RIP software—VersaWorks® 7—has greater processing capacity, a more intuitive user interface, and is now compatible with macOS as well as Windows. In addition, the XG-640 comes with access to the expanded cloud-based Roland DG Connect platform, which provides a host of useful tools and resources for users to streamline their workflow, manage print operations, and grow their businesses.

The nature of today’s technology is such that many distinct decorating methods are becoming increasingly integrated: case in point, screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG), in which a DTG printer is used to create a detailed image on a screen-printed white base. With this in mind, Avient Specialty Inks’ MagnaColours division has created what it calls its MagnaPrint Hybrid Fusion Vibrant White product, a flexible, soft, high-opacity, water-based ink specifically formulated for use as part of a hybrid digital printing system. Specific strengths include its ability to deliver impeccable detail, vibrancy and strong wash fastness without the need for a topcoat or additives. Per MagnaColours, “This innovative, water-based ink provides a sustainable solution for digital hybrid printing, offering screen printers a flexible, soft and high-opacity base ink. What sets MagnaPrint Hybrid Fusion Vibrant White apart is its impressive cure portfolio, featuring a curing time that is half as long as that of the leading competitor.” In practice this kind of efficiency not only reduces energy consumption but also enhances overall throughput, making it an outstanding option for decorators in more ways than one. There are plenty of reasons the cutting-edge decorating technique that is DTF continues to grow in popularity

For newbies and established businesses in the custom decorated apparel field, finding innovative methods to boost profits is essential. Whether you’re a seasoned T-shirt screen printer, a custom embroidery professional or just starting out in custom apparel decoration, integrating direct-to-transfer (DTF) heat press technology into your business offers immense potential. What follows is a brief survey of the equipment you’ll need, how DTF works and why now is a great time to get started in the DTF business.

Why DTF? Why now?

Direct-to-transfer heat press decoration has emerged as a game-changing solution for custom apparel businesses for a number of reasons:

  • Low setup costs: Unlike traditional screen printing or embroidery, DTF printing does not require large investments in multiple screens or special embroidery setups
  • Versatility: You can use DTF transfers to decorate a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends and even difficult materials like nylon
  • Improved quality: Recent advancements in DTF technology mean transfers now offer a better “hand,” or feel, than ever, making finished products more comfortable; they are also more durable
  • Design flexibility: DTF easily handles detailed multi-color designs, gradients and photo-like prints without the need for complex screen-printing processes
  • Ease of use: In contrast to screen printing and custom embroidery, as is the case with heat-press decoration in general, training is minimal with DTF.
  • With benefits like these, DTF heat-press transfers allow businesses to attract more customers by offering a combination of high-quality and fast-turnarounds. Note: DTF transfers can also be stored indefinitely, which means by laying in a stock of designs in advance you can make your turnaround times that much faster.

Beyond that, while historically DTF has found itself at a disadvantage to screen printing when it comes to higher production runs, a number of recent developments in terms of equipment and the transfers themselves have begun to close the gap.

On the equipment side, for example, long-time auto screen-printing press manufacturer ROQ has unveiled what it calls its IMPRESS, a fully automatic heat-pressing system.

On the transfer side of things, hot or cold peels are now available, cutting processing times dramatically.  In the case of STAHLS’ Transfer Express, you can also take advantage of gang sheets (large sheets containing multiple transfers) that can be pulled apart by hand, as opposed to having to cut out into separate transfers with a pair of scissors.

Direct-to-Film Equipment Needs

Getting into DTF heat press decorating requires some investment in the right equipment and supplies. But the good news is it remains accessible to both startups and larger more established shops looking to expand. Here’s what you’ll need:

1) Heat Press Equipment

For applying DTF transfers, you’ll need a high-quality heat press. Look for one that delivers even heat and pressure, both of which are essential for consistent results. As is the case with pretty much any piece of equipment you buy, you get what pay for. All platens, for example, are not alike. The better ones provide even, reliable heat across their entire surface. Cheaper models do not. Same thing with the linkages uses to raise and lower the top platen. Well-made ones will last, while the many cheaper no-name models out there or many “craft” models on the market won’t.

This also is very much a situation in which it pays to buy American, not just because U.S. manufactures do better work, but because they stand behind their products and are easy to get hold of in the event something does wrong. Note: in addition to the many entry-level manual presses available, there are also various different specialist presses for decorating things like caps, mugs, sleeves and other kinds of merch.

Top brands include:

2) Custom DTF Transfers

Obviously, to get started in the DTF custom apparel business, you’ll need quick and easy access to top-quality transfers. The good news is not only do suppliers abound, but they are continually upping their game with respect to everything from transfer quality to special effects transfers. They are also increasingly offering

quick and affordable delivery times as well as the online design tools you’re going to need to ensure you get the designs you want.

Note: as is the case with heat presses, you get what you pay for with transfers as well. If you want transfers that look great and can stand up to dozens of washings, go for one of the big names. You’ll be glad you did. If and when you get your business to a point where you might want to consider bringing transfer production in-house there are any number of different DTF printer manufacturers to choose from. For those just starting out, though, outsourcing is not only a viable option, but the smart one.

Some of the industry’s leading custom DTF providers that you might want to consider include:

Contact any one of these companies, and they’ll be happy to not only help get you up and running, but provide you with samples as well as any number of reasons for you to make them your DTF provider of choice.

3) Ancillary Direct-to-Film Equipment

While the learning curve for basic DTF decoration may be a forgiving one, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some tricks of the trade for those looking to decorate heat-sensitive high-performance fabrics; hard-to-press spots like sleeves; or garments with things like zippers or a whole lot of seams that keep getting in the way.

To help out in these kinds of situations, today’s press manufacturers offer a host of pads, cover sheets, heat resistant tape and a wide range of customized platens to ensure even the most problematic pressing job will meet with success. Note: even if you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to stock up on some of these extra pieces of equipment so you aren’t left wishing you had one of them when you need it.

Making DTF Work for Your Custom Apparel Shop

If you’re currently running a screen-printing or custom embroidery business, DTF can be the perfect addition. For screen printers, this means offering high-quality, multi-color designs without setting up screens for each color. For embroiderers this means offering lower-cost products with especially quick turnaround times. You can also use a DTF heat press to attract those same smaller order volumes that can be so problematic when it comes to screen printing or embroidery. What follows is just a few of the things DTF allows you to do that might not be able to do otherwise.

1) Diversify Your Products

Easily expand your current product line beyond just T-shirts by tapping into such products:

  • Hoodies
  • Tote bags
  • Hats or caps
  • Activewear
  • DTF’s versatility ensures you can increase your product variety without reworking your setup extensively. At most you might need a custom platen or two, or a maybe a specialized hat press. The increased revenue you’ll find yourself bringing in will likely result in a rapid return on investment.

2) Facilitate Low Minimum Orders

Unlike screen printing, in particular, which typically requires high minimum order requirements to compensate for setup costs, DTF decoration makes it easy to handle small, custom orders. This flexibility will appeal to niche customers like small businesses or individuals seeking personalized items.

3) Expedite Fast Turnarounds

DTF transfers allow for quicker production times compared to other methods. Because the leading custom transfer manufacturers mentioned in this article all offer same day or 24-hour shipping times, you can be up and running with fulfillment ASAP. As mentioned earlier, you can also get ahead of things by already having some of your more popular designs in stock for immediate pressing. Either way, use this as a selling point in your marketing efforts to attract clients working on a tight deadline.

4) Leverage Online Marketing Efforts

Increase visibility and drive sales online by showcasing your DTF custom products on platforms such as:

  • Social Media (Instagram, TikTok)
  • Etsy or Shopify for selling custom and ready-made pieces
  • Your own website, highlighting the benefits of your DTF services and fast turnaround times

The aforementioned flexibility in terms of everything from design options to product selection and turnaround times are perfect for today’s digital customers. Attract their attention with your innate creativity, make it clear to them they can have whatever products they may be interested sooner rather than later, and watch the sales roll in.

The Time for Direct-to-Film is Now

As stated earlier, improvements in DTF technology over the past few years make this the perfect time to adopt heat press customization. Enhanced hot and cold peel performance means faster application, while advancements in transfer durability ensure long-lasting designs customers will love. With small order capabilities and efficient processes, DTF decoration ensures you can deliver exceptional quality profitably at any scale.

Whether you’re just starting a custom apparel business or looking to expand an existing one, direct-to-transfer heat press technology offers an accessible and highly profitable way to grow your business. So, what are you waiting for?
