In the dynamic world of customizing t-shirts, apparel, and promo products, Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers has redefined what’s possible — and Ninja Transfers is leading the charge. This cutting-edge printing method offers unparalleled flexibility, letting you apply ANY DESIGN with vibrant and high-quality prints to virtually any fabric. From cotton and polyester to blends, nylon, and even spandex, DTF ensures your creations are bold, durable, and made to last.

But what makes DTF such a game-changer? They work on almost everything. The days of figuring out which transfer to use for each order is gone. DTF is the silver bullet of transfers solving all of your design, material, color, and location considerations per job.

Where traditional methods fall short — like DTG struggling with synthetic materials or bright colors where it leaves stains. Or sublimation requiring 100% white or light colored polyester — DTF outshines both options. It works effortlessly on light and dark garments, smooth or textured surfaces even Pique polos and across seams like on 6 panel hats or side seams of t-shirts.

It’s no wonder why DTG machine sales are the business equivalent of an overpriced truck going 150 mph crashing into a brick wall as of 2023 sales. DTF is the future and DTF transfers are the quickest way to test it, learn it, and scale it. From there you can always think about getting your own DTF Machine, but pricing has gotten so efficient, you won’t have to.

Ninja Transfers brings all the power of DTF directly to your business with a fast, reliable, and affordable service that’s built for decorators and creators of all sizes. Whether you’re running a bustling print shop or just starting your brand, Ninja Transfers gives you access to professional-quality DTF transfers without needing to invest in expensive equipment. Simply upload your design, receive your transfers as quick as NEXT DAY, and press them on — it’s that easy.

Durability is another standout benefit. Ninja Transfers’ heat transfers are made to last, resisting cracking, peeling, and fading wash after wash — even on stretchy or performance fabrics. You get that “like-new” look for the long haul — 60 to 100 washes.

What really sets Ninja Transfers apart is the convenience and support. Their user-friendly ordering process, no minimums, free shipping, AI Tools, quick turnaround times, and expert customer service make it easy to bring your ideas to life — no stress, no guesswork.

For anyone in the custom merch game, DTF is THE choice — and Ninja Transfers is your go-to partner. With top-tier print quality, fabric versatility, and unbeatable ease of use, it’s the ultimate way to level up your apparel game.

DTF vs. DTG vs. Screen Printing https://impressionsmagazine.com/sponsored/dtf-vs-dtg-vs-screen-printing/165250/ https://impressionsmagazine.com/sponsored/dtf-vs-dtg-vs-screen-printing/165250/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 19:18:58 +0000 https://impressionsmagazine.com/?p=165250 The Future of Printing and Why Ninja Transfers Leads the Way

The post DTF vs. DTG vs. Screen Printing appeared first on Impressions.

]]>
The world of custom apparel printing has evolved rapidly, with new technologies emerging to enhance efficiency, versatility, and print quality. Three of the most widely used methods today are Direct-to-Garment (DTG), Screen Printing, and Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing. While DTG has long been a staple in the industry for low quantity or full color designs, DTF is proving to be the superior choice for print shops, businesses, and hobbyists due to its cost effectiveness, product and placement capability, as well as full color, high details, and dye blocking properties. And when it comes to high volume full color orders, DTF has caught up in terms of unit economics removing the need for screens, inks, setups, high skill talent and product spoilage. This is the reason why Ninja’s customers are increasing their average order size produced with DTF almost on a weekly basis.

1. Versatility Across Products and Fabrics

One of DTF’s most significant advantages over DTG and Screen Printing is its ability to print on a wider range of fabrics. DTG printing primarily works well on 100% cotton garments, limiting its application for polyester, blends, leather, and other materials. Screen printing used to be the only option to fill in on those other materials, but printing was slow, arduous, and risky. In contrast, DTF printing adheres to almost any fabric type, making it a more versatile option for businesses that need to cater to diverse customer demands.

2. Superior Durability and Washability

When it comes to durability, DTF prints have the upper hand. DTG prints, while vibrant on cotton, tend to fade over time with multiple washes. Screen printed garments and DTF prints, on the other hand, are known for their exceptional wash resistance. Ninja Transfers’ DTF transfers have proven to last over 100 wash cycles.

3. Cost Efficiency and Scalability

DTG is a rapidly dying print method due to its material limitations and competition with DTF. For businesses looking to maximize profits, the new killer combo is Screen printing and DTF transfers. Send the larger orders to be screen printed on garments that are easy to control like cotton and 50/50 blends. The remainder, even larger orders, can go right to DTF Transfers these days.

4. Why Ninja Transfers DTF Transfers Are the Best Choice

Not all DTF transfers are created equal, and this is where Ninja Transfers stands out from the competition. Their DTF transfers are crafted with industry-leading technology, ensuring superior color vibrancy, stretchability, and durability. Unlike competitors, Ninja Transfers offers:

  • Higher-Quality Adhesion – Their transfers adhere seamlessly to fabrics, providing a professional finish that lasts wash after wash.
  • Superior Stretch and Flexibility – Ninja Transfers’ DTF prints resist cracking and peeling, making them ideal for activewear and high-movement garments.
  • Vibrant, Fade-Resistant Colors – Their advanced ink formulas ensure prints remain bright and detailed over time, even after repeated laundering.
  • Fast Turnaround Times – With efficient production processes, Ninja Transfers helps businesses meet tight deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic Materials – They prioritize sustainability by using environmentally friendly inks and materials, ensuring safe and responsible printing practices.

While Screen Printing and DTG printing have been reliable methods for custom apparel, DTF printing is emerging as the future of 30 to 50% of the industry. With its ability to print on many fabrics, superior durability, lower costs, faster production, and enhanced color vibrancy, DTF is proving to be the go-to choice for print shops and entrepreneurs looking to stay ahead in the competitive custom apparel market. DTG is becoming the industry dinosaur. For those seeking the best in DTF technology, Ninja Transfers’ DTF transfers is the top choice for businesses looking to elevate their printing game. For more information visit NinjaTransfers.com today and take your business to new heights.

In the ever-evolving world of garment decoration, durability remains a key concern for both businesses and their customers. With countless printing methods available—screen printing, sublimation, heat transfer vinyl, and direct-to-film (DTF) transfers—finding the perfect balance between quality, longevity, and ease of application has long been a challenge. However, one company has redefined what it means to create high-quality, long-lasting apparel embellishments: Ninja Transfers with their DTF Transfers.

Recent testing has confirmed that Ninja Transfers’ DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers can withstand over 100 wash and dry cycles while maintaining their vibrant color, flexibility, and adhesion when hung dry. This achievement is a game-changer in DTF, setting a new standard for durability and quality that rivals even the most established printing techniques.

Breaking the Stigma Around DTF Durability

Direct-to-film printing has gained rapid popularity in the past few years due to its versatility, ease of use, and increased reliability in the supply chain. However, one of the most common concerns surrounding DTF technology is the question of longevity. Can these transfers truly last, or do they crack, fade, and peel after just a few washes? The answer, as demonstrated by Ninja Transfers, is a resounding yes—when produced with top-tier materials and processes, DTF transfers can go the distance. Unlike cheaper alternatives that may begin to show wear after 20 or 30 washes, Ninja Transfers’ DTF prints have proven their resilience beyond 100 washes.

A New Era for Custom Apparel

The ability to withstand 100+ washes without compromising on appearance or performance is a major breakthrough for DTF printing. For small business owners, print shops, and clothing brands, this means greater customer satisfaction, reduced returns, and long-term wearability—key factors that contribute to brand loyalty and repeat sales.

With Ninja Transfers leading the charge in durability, vibrancy, and ease of application, the future of DTF printing looks brighter than ever. Their achievement proves that with the right materials and processes, DTF transfers can not only match but exceed the durability of traditional print methods.

For those in the custom apparel business, the message is clear: invest in quality, and your customers will notice the difference. Ninja Transfers has set a new benchmark, proving that innovation and durability can go hand in hand in the world of garment printing.

Peel Hot and Effortlessly and Boost Productivity 2x-4x with the Next Evolution in DTF Transfers.

The world of Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and Ninja Transfers is leading the charge with their groundbreaking Easy Peel Technology. Designed to enhance productivity, accuracy, and efficiency, this innovation is set to revolutionize the way DTF transfers are applied, making it easier than ever to achieve professional results while saving valuable time.

Why is Easy Peel Technology 2x-4x Faster?

Easy Peel Technology is a cutting-edge film developed by Ninja Transfers that allows you to peel hot and slow, rather than hot and fast, increasing accuracy and confidence. Traditional methods often require lightning fast pulling to ensure the transfer is peeled correctly, but this puts that product at risk as you hope for the best and pull. With Easy Peel Technology, customers can peel their transfers smoothly while the material is still hot, eliminating the tedious wait times and more easily releasing the design from the transfer, greatly reducing the risk of errors on all materials.

Double Matte Film Enhances Accuracy and Precision

Accuracy is paramount in the world of DTF transfers, and Ninja Transfers has prioritized this with their film coating technology. Easy Peel Technology is double matted, so it minimizes the risks of misaligned prints, tearing when pulling, or incomplete transfers, providing a clean and professional print every time. This improvement is particularly beneficial for intricate designs and high-detail artwork, where precision is non-negotiable. With Ninja Transfers, you can trust that your final product will consistently meet the highest standards of quality.

Peel Hot and Effortlessly

Gone are the days of waiting for transfers to cool before peeling. Easy Peel Technology allows users to peel their transfers immediately after application while the material is still hot. This feature not only saves time but also ensures a seamless and hassle-free process. By reducing wait time and eliminating the need for cooling dwell times or cooling devices, Ninja Transfers helps businesses maximize productivity and achieve faster production times. Also with their new Silicone upper platen protector, you no longer have to worry about the additional time and movements required with taking parchment paper on and off in between presses. Leave the Silicon upper platen protector magnetized to your press at all times.

Boost Productivity with the Next Evolution in DTF Transfers

Ninja Transfers’ Easy Peel Technology is more than just an innovation—it’s a game-changer for the DTF industry. By addressing common pain points and introducing a faster, more accurate method for applying transfers, this technology empowers businesses to work smarter, not harder. From hobbyists to large-scale production facilities, anyone using DTF transfers can benefit from the improved efficiency and quality that Easy Peel Technology offers.
Ninja Transfers has a proven track record of delivering top-quality products and solutions for the DTF industry. Their commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction sets them apart as a leader in the field. With Easy Peel Technology, they continue to uphold their reputation for excellence, offering a product that is not only reliable but also transformative.

In the embroidery business, different practitioners often face different challenges. From beginners just entering the industry, to experienced professional embroidery shops, and large-scale manufacturing companies, the challenges they face vary widely. For beginners, the primary issue is how to quickly master the machine’s operation; for established embroidery businesses, their needs are more specialized. At the same time, many large factories and commercial embroidery brands are eager to improve production efficiency and reduce costs to remain competitive.

These diverse market demands have driven continuous innovation in equipment design. To better meet the needs of different user groups, BAi, based on in-depth market research and years of technical accumulation, is launching three newly designed embroidery machines. These three products address numerous pain points for customers, significantly improving both user-friendliness and embroidery performance.

For embroidery beginners, the ideal machine should not only offer reliable quality and embroidery performance but also be user-friendly and affordable. THE MIRROR is designed with these very needs in mind, perfectly meeting the requirements of beginners.

Firstly, THE MIRROR is easy to assemble. With fewer screws, more ergonomic hole designs, and a unique cup slot design, it can be assembled by one person. Secondly, THE MIRROR is very easy to maintain. By improving the design and using quality parts, THE MIRROR reduces the frequency and areas that require oiling, while also avoiding the oil leakage issues caused by over-oiling. Additionally, THE MIRROR features the all-new Institch i5 controller, which is extremely simple to operate. With just three easy steps, you can start an embroidery project.

Priced at only $5,399, THE MIRROR is budget-friendly but does not compromise on quality and performance, making it a reliable choice for embroidery beginners with limited budgets. Every factor influencing embroidery precision has been carefully considered, from the upgraded controller and transmission system to precise motion control.

The Beast for Structured Hat Embroidery

Once you’ve achieved initial success in the embroidery business and are looking to upgrade your machine, THE VISION is your top choice for the next level. Like THE MIRROR, THE VISION has been optimized in areas such as machine assembly, maintenance, and controller, offering users even more convenience. Moreover, THE VISION enhances embroidery quality beyond that of THE MIRROR, particularly excelling in hat embroidery.

With the booming demand for personalized customization, especially in the sportswear, street culture, and personalized gifts markets, hat embroidery has become a key customization item. However, due to the unique materials and shapes of hats, many embroidery machines struggle to meet this demand. For hat embroidery businesses, choosing a machine suited for this task is critical.

In response to this market demand, BAi has made significant innovations and breakthroughs. The upgraded needle bar power system and bobbin system give the machine powerful penetration, allowing it to easily handle hats with complex structures and ensure precise and flawless embroidery. BAi has also introduced an intelligent speed reduction algorithm, enabling the machine to dynamically adjust the embroidery speed based on different working conditions, further improving embroidery precision and operational stability. Additionally, BAi has deeply optimized the embroidery path planning, significantly enhancing the machine’s operational efficiency. By optimizing the head design and increasing its range of motion, THE VISION can get closer to the brim of the hat during embroidery, greatly improving embroidery accuracy and overall quality.

A particularly noteworthy advancement is THE VISION’s major progress in 3D foam embroidery technology. Whether it’s 1-5mm thick foam, THE VISION can easily handle it, achieving high-quality embroidery results. This breakthrough not only enhances the 3D effect and detail of the embroidery but also expands the application of BAi’s embroidery machines in the hat embroidery field.

For embroidery shop owners who have strict requirements for embroidery quality or specialize in hat embroidery, THE VISION is nearly indispensable.

THE VISION-2 HEADS ⬅ Click here to learn more

A Powerful Assistant for Business Growth

For embroidery businesses with high order volumes, improving production efficiency is a major challenge. As the order volume increases, how to speed up production while maintaining high embroidery quality becomes a key issue for businesses.

To address the challenges of production efficiency and cost control, BAi has introduced the highly cost-effective THE VISION-2 HEADS, designed with efficiency in mind, making it ideal for businesses that require large-scale embroidery. Compared to single-head machines, the two-head machine not only solves the capacity issue but also significantly improves work efficiency, especially for handling bulk orders.

Priced at just $10,999, THE VISION-2 HEADS offers a more economical option compared to expensive two-head machines on the market, while still delivering excellent embroidery results. It meets the high precision and stability demands of embroidery shop owners. This not only saves on equipment investment but also brings higher economic benefits through improved production efficiency. Therefore, THE VISION-2 HEADS is undoubtedly the ideal choice for customers seeking cost-effectiveness and high production efficiency.

Meeting Diverse Needs, Supporting Industry Innovation

The three newly designed embroidery machines from BAi aim to meet the varying needs of customers at different levels. From beginners with zero experience, to businesses focused on hat embroidery, to established shop owners seeking high-efficiency production, BAi offers the right embroidery machine for every type of customer. These machines provide more options, helping customers gain a competitive edge in the intense market competition.

Technology drives the brand—that’s the development philosophy BAi has always adhered to. In the future, BAi will continue to iterate on technology, providing better embroidery machines for the global embroidery industry.

In a wide-ranging Q&A with Impressions Content Director, Adam Cort, Henry Ma, CEO of Ricoma International shares his thoughts on everything from advice for entrepreneurs entering the custom apparel market to strategies for building a client base and why the custom apparel business can be such a satisfying one. For more on Ricoma, and its wide-ranging line of embroidery, DTF, DTG and heat-pressing equipment and materials, go to ricoma.com/US.

Adam Cort: What inspired you to get involved in the custom apparel industry, and what makes it such a great opportunity for entrepreneurs today?

Henry Ma: I grew up surrounded by the custom apparel industry, and I saw a unique opportunity to make custom apparel equipment more accessible to entrepreneurs, empowering them to unleash their creativity. Back then, the industry lacked the abundance of information that’s readily available today, and we wanted to be pioneers in sharing this knowledge with the average consumer.

Over the last decade, technology has advanced tremendously, making equipment far more affordable and accessible than ever before. This evolution has created an incredible opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to step into the industry with the tools and guidance they need to succeed. By bridging the gap between accessibility and education, we aim to help others turn their passion for custom apparel into a thriving business.

AC: How has the custom apparel industry changed over the years, and what do you think makes now a good time to start a business in this space?

HM: Custom apparel equipment and technology have evolved over the years, with new decoration technologies emerging and features that make it easy for consumers to operate the machinery. The affordability of the equipment needed to get started in the custom apparel industry is one of the reasons why now is a good time to start a business in this space. On top of that, the communities of people that share information and insight about the industry has also grown tremendously over the years. People in this industry are very willing to help one another and that level of access to support within a large community helps newcomers avoid common pitfalls and have a higher chance of success.

AC: What are the essential pieces of equipment someone needs to get started with custom apparel?

Ricoma decorated apparel heat presses

HM: To get started with custom apparel, there are a few essential pieces of equipment that can set you up for success. A heat press is a must-have—it’s one of the most versatile and cost-effective tools for beginners, especially if you’re on a tight budget. You can easily purchase ready-made transfers online at a low cost, like with our new DTF (direct-to-transfer) program, and press them onto garments, allowing you to start creating custom apparel with minimal upfront investment. Plus, a heat press is crucial for many printing methods, such as direct-to-garment (DTG) printing, where it’s used to cure the design. It’s also great for prepping garments by smoothing and drying them before any application, ensuring a professional finish.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, an embroidery machine is a great next step. Embroidery is considered a premium decoration method with higher perceived value, which means higher profit margins. Unlike printing, embroidery offers unmatched durability and longevity, making it a favorite for professional uniforms, caps and other high-end products. If you can master embroidery, you open the door to a highly profitable segment of the custom apparel market that sets your business apart.

Starting with these two tools—a heat press and an embroidery machine—provides a solid foundation to grow your business while diversifying your service offerings and maximizing profitability.

The Right Decorating Equipment for Your Custom Apparel Company

AC: How do you decide between different equipment options like embroidery machines, DTF printers, or DTG printers for a new business?

HM: Choosing between equipment options like embroidery machines, and DTF printers or DTG printers depends on your business goals, target market and desired results. Each option offers unique benefits, so understanding your needs is key.

Ricoma Luminaris DTF Printer

Direct-to-transfer systems, like the Ricoma Luminaris DTF Printer, can be used to customize a wide range of articles. Photo courtesy of Ricoma International

DTF printers are excellent for high-volume production, as they can print over 100 transfers per hour. This makes them ideal if you have a steady stream of clients or large orders to fulfill. However, DTF does require an additional step of heat pressing each design onto the garment.

DTG printers, on the other hand, print directly onto the fabric, producing slightly longer-lasting prints compared to DTF. Both methods offer high-quality, durable results, but DTG requires garments to be pre-treated (or purchasing pre-treated apparel), adding an extra step. Printing services like DTF and DTG are in high demand due to their ease of use and vibrant results. However, they face stiff competition since printing is easier to learn and more widely offered.

Embroidery machines, while requiring a higher skill level and learning curve, can set your business apart. Embroidery is a premium, timeless application that offers unparalleled durability and perceived value. The market for embroidery tends to be less saturated than printing, which can lead to higher margins. If you’re willing to master embroidery, you’ll be able to offer a service that stands out as both high-quality and long-lasting.

Ricoma Vision DTG-Printer

Ultimately, your choice should align with your business model. For example, if you’re creating simple tourist tees or vacation merchandise, a heat press with pre-made transfers might suffice. But if you’re targeting high-end corporate clients or creating premium, custom designs, embroidery or DTG printing could be a better fit. Starting with a clear vision of your target market and production goals will help you choose the equipment that’s right for you.

AC: What initial investments should someone expect when starting a custom apparel business, and what are some tips to manage costs?

HM: Starting a custom apparel business requires thoughtful investments, but with smart planning, you can manage costs effectively. The biggest initial expense is equipment, which depends on your focus. For instance, a heat press is an affordable starting point, allowing you to create a variety of products with minimal investment. If you’re aiming for higher-value offerings, embroidery machines or printing equipment like DTF or DTG printers are excellent options, though they come with higher price tags.

You’ll also need materials like blanks, thread, ink or transfer films, which are essential for your production process. To manage costs and ensure you never run out when you need them most, Ricoma offers a convenient Subscribe and Save program. This allows you to have these supplies delivered on a schedule that works for you while saving a little on each order, keeping your operations running smoothly and efficiently. You should also create a wholesale account to ensure you’re maximizing your savings on blanks.

Marketing and Standing Out in the Custom Apparel Market

AC: What’s the best way for new business owners to stand out in a competitive market and what are some initial marketing tips that you recommend?

HM: For new custom apparel business owners, standing out in a competitive market is all about leveraging your unique strengths as a small business. One of the best ways to differentiate yourself is by focusing on custom, personalized work. Large businesses often lack the time and flexibility to handle small, detailed custom orders, but as a small business, you can fill that gap by offering tailored solutions that meet specific customer needs. Whether it’s one-off designs, intricate embroidery, or fast turnaround times for small orders, your ability to cater to unique requests can set you apart and create loyal customers.

Another key advantage is providing exceptional, personalized customer service. While larger companies may struggle to maintain a personal touch, you can go above and beyond by building relationships with your clients. Take the time to understand their needs, offer guidance on design choices and provide proactive updates on their orders. This level of care not only creates a positive experience but also encourages repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals.

From a marketing perspective, start by tapping into your local community. Partner with small businesses, schools or organizations that need custom apparel. Word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied customers are incredibly powerful, so focus on delivering quality work that gets people talking. To expand your reach, optimize your online presence by creating a professional, SEO-friendly website with examples of your work, easy ways to contact you, and clear calls to action.

Social media is another invaluable tool for showcasing your capabilities. Post consistently on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and highlight your custom projects, behind-the-scenes processes and customer testimonials. Engage with your audience regularly to build trust and community.

Once you’ve built a strong foundation through referrals, local partnerships and organic social media efforts, you can explore paid advertising to scale your reach. By focusing on personalized service, custom work, and community connections, you can carve out a niche that helps your small business thrive, even in a competitive market.

AC: What are the common challenges new entrepreneurs face in the custom apparel industry, and how can they overcome feeling overwhelmed by technical aspects like digitizing or learning how to use equipment?

HM: One of the most common hurdles new entrepreneurs face is feeling overwhelmed by the technical aspects of the business, like learning how to digitize designs or operate equipment. This is completely normal—no one starts as an expert, but with persistence and the right tools, you can gain the skills you need to succeed.

The key to overcoming these challenges is leveraging the resources available to you. For instance, many equipment manufacturers, like Ricoma, provide comprehensive training and support to help you get started. This includes free onboarding sessions, live training with an instructor and extensive libraries of tutorial videos that walk you through everything from operating your machine to mastering digitizing software. Additionally, joining online communities of other business owners in the industry can provide invaluable support. Platforms like Facebook groups or industry forums allow you to ask questions, share experiences and learn from others who have been in your shoes.

Another common challenge is managing the learning curve while still delivering quality products to your customers. My advice here is to start with simpler projects while you build your confidence and skills. You don’t have to take on everything at once—focus on mastering one process at a time.

When it comes to digitizing, many beginners find it intimidating at first, but with practice, it becomes second nature. If it feels like too much to tackle right away, you can outsource your digitizing to professionals while you focus on growing your business. Over time, as you gain more experience, you can bring digitizing in-house to have more control over your designs and cut costs.

Finally, time management and balancing all the moving parts of a business can be tough for new entrepreneurs. To stay organized, create systems for scheduling, pricing, and order management. Many businesses overlook the importance of having these foundational processes in place, but they make a huge difference in managing your workload and reducing stress.

Scaling Up Your Business

AC: How can a small custom apparel business scale up and successfully expand into additional services?

HM: Scaling up a custom apparel business starts with diversification. Once you have a steady flow of clients, expanding into additional services is one of the best ways to grow your revenue and customer base. For example, if your business is primarily focused on embroidery, adding DTF printing allows you to cater to a wider range of customer needs, from high-volume printed designs to more intricate embroidery projects. Offering both services gives your clients more options and positions your business as a one-stop shop for custom apparel.

To make this transition smoothly, start by analyzing your customer base and identifying the most in-demand services. If many of your clients are asking for printed designs, DTF printing is a natural next step.

Investing in new equipment can feel daunting, but many suppliers offer training and support to help you get started. Focus on mastering the basics of the other service and leverage your existing reputation and relationships to market your new service. Reach out to your current clients and let them know you’re expanding your offerings. This not only drives immediate business but also reinforces your position as a versatile and reliable provider. Scaling doesn’t have to mean overextending—expand strategically by introducing services that align with your current operations.

AC: What’s the most rewarding part of starting a custom apparel business?

HM: Although I don’t run a custom apparel business myself, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with thousands of entrepreneurs in this industry, and I often hear directly from our clients about what makes it so rewarding. The most fulfilling part, they tell me, is the ability to bring ideas to life and see their creativity turned into tangible products that people love. There’s a unique sense of pride in creating something that brings joy and meaning to others.

Another rewarding aspect is the freedom and flexibility that come with running your own business. Many of our clients talk about how this industry allows them to take control of their future, set their own schedules and build something that aligns with their passions. It’s also incredibly gratifying to watch their businesses grow, from taking on their first client to expanding their offerings and achieving financial independence.

AC: What advice would you give to someone who is passionate about custom apparel but hesitant to take the leap into entrepreneurship?

HM: If you’re passionate about custom apparel but hesitant to take the leap into entrepreneurship, my advice is simple: just start. Don’t overthink it, don’t wait for the “perfect” time—because the perfect time doesn’t exist. The truth is, you’ll never feel 100 percent ready, and that’s okay. What matters is taking that first step.

Many people let fear of the unknown or lack of experience hold them back, but here’s the thing: you’ll figure it out as you go. You don’t need to have everything mapped out or be an expert from day one. Start small—get a heat press or an embroidery machine, take on a few orders, and let the process teach you. The beauty of this industry is that you can start part-time or even from your home and grow at your own pace.

You’re not alone, either. There are countless resources, communities, and support systems to help you succeed. You don’t need to have all the answers to get started—you just need to believe in yourself enough to take that first step.

Long a global leader in the area digital apparel decorating, Epson continues to push the envelope with a line of “hybrid” printers capable of both direct-to-garment (DTG) and direct-to-film (DTF) decorating. Impressions content director, Adam Cort, spoke with Tim Check, senior product manager of professional imaging with Epson America, to learn some more about this powerful new technology.

Adam Cort: Epson has been putting a lot of time and effort into developing its DTG/DTF Hybrid Printer Line. Could you describe how these systems work and the advantages they offer to decorators?

Tim Check: For over a decade, Epson has dedicated itself to developing high-quality DTG printers designed to make the life of a garment decorator easier. By developing equipment that delivers consistency and reliability, shop owners can focus on growing their business, rather than troubleshooting equipment.

Recently, Epson has been focusing on developing its DTG and DTFilm hybrid printers; engineered to bring reliability, color consistency and ease of use to garment decorators. DTG and DTFilm are two prevalent methods. These hybrid solutions give garment decorators more tools in their chest, providing the ability to determine the best solution for each print by taking design intricacy, hand feel and cost into consideration. These solutions grant more freedom to the designer to bring their full vision to life, knowing items can be produced in a cost-effective manner.

Each print method has its advantages. DTG is ideal for creating larger, full-color graphics with intricate details. With DTG, a garment decorator can produce a high-quality, full-color, vibrant fashion T-shirt with a very soft hand feel. These are generally premium products and work best when printing directly to the garment. DTFilm is ideal for producing smaller prints, such as chest pocket logos, or printing and transferring graphics to a hard-to-print area—such as a shirt sleeve. With DTFilm, a garment decorator can print one sheet with multiple images or logos that can be applied quickly and cost-effectively.

Additionally, garment decorators must consider the fabrics they are working with when determining the best print method. DTG works well with cotton blended fabrics, while DTFilm works on just about any type of fabric, including fabric blends that are not typically supported by DTG printing, such as 100-percent polyester, nylon and other quick-drying, athletic fabric, as well as on unusually shaped items like hats, shoes, tote bags and more.

In today’s market, there’s an emphasis on sustainability and as a result, there is a shift away from mass production. DTG and DTFilm print technology supports orders as they come in and can reduce excess inventory and waste once a new trend comes along. The newer models, produced by reputable brands, provide a consistent, reliable hardware solution that make it easier for garment decorators to satisfy their customers, providing options to potentially expand shop capabilities and create long-lasting, durable garments sustainably and efficiently.

AC: For those interested in taking the DTG/DTF hybrid route, what factors should they bear in mind when deciding between, say, the smaller F1070 and the mid-level F2270 model?

TC: For those who are new to the industry, or those coming in with a consumer-grade product and want to further expand into garment decorating, it would be ideal to start with an entry-level hybrid DTG/DTFilm printer. This provides the print shop the opportunity to become familiar with both printing methods. Having the ability to print to film transfers can expand product offerings to polyester, cotton/poly blends, tri-blends and more—even products outside of the textile space.

The entry-level SureColor® F1070 also has the ability to help take care of itself, with integrated proactive and reactive maintenance features, making it easier for the entry-level garment decorator to focus on creating the best design, rather than on ongoing printer maintenance tasks.

A hybrid DTG and DTFilm system provides the flexibility for garment decorators to select the best print method for each product. Starting with an entry-level solution provides a cost-effective way of getting into the industry with the possibility of expanding offering without a large upfront investment.

For decorators looking to take their productions runs to the next level, the Epson SureColor F2270 DTG/DTF hybrid printer makes for a great choice. Photo courtesy of Epson

For those more experienced garment decorators or print shops looking for larger capacity, the mid-range SureColor F2270 or high-capacity SureColor F3070 can produce larger images, support thicker garments and offer print shops increased efficiency and productivity. A print shop’s needs vary—for instance, a screen-printing business requiring a quick turnaround on three dozen shirts would benefit from a mid or high-capacity DTG printer as it’s an ideal solution for on-demand orders.

AC: For those interested in exploring DTG/DTF, what’s involved in terms of things like training and maintenance when working with these kinds of systems?

TC: Over the past decade, significant advancements in DTG/DTFilm technology have impacted training and maintenance. Previously, those operating garment printers needed to have a technical background and be very comfortable performing ongoing maintenance tasks, such as ink priming and purging. These tasks could take hours, greatly reducing the time spent printing and creating sellable goods. However, stemming from the work of Epson, there is now a focus on creating technology that actually works and drastically reduces maintenance, and the amount of time spent on training employees.

Today, some printers can help take care of themselves with integrated proactive and reactive maintenance features. For example, Epson DTG/DTFilm printers leverage Nozzle Verification Technology that can detect nozzle clogs and printhead issues that automatically compensates or correct the problem without a print operator. These printers can monitor and handle various maintenance tasks on their own, reducing the number of wasted prints due to poor print quality and the need for intensive operator technical training.

When training to use the printers, it’s important to understand how to get great results. To learn the best techniques, as well as tips and tricks, manufacturers and dealers offer a variety of both video and in-person training sessions. For example, the Epson Print Academy on YouTube offers videos designed to help printer operators understand their equipment and produce high-quality sellable goods.

Additionally, learning the different types of fabrics for those interested in garment printing is critical during the training process. Understanding the fabric options available, their benefits and how to design for each fabric type helps the garment decorator meet customer expectations. Whether they want a soft fashion garment or durable workwear, the fabric selected will help customers make their final decision. When learning to design for fabric, unlike other print styles, it’s essential to lean into the negative space—having empty space on a garment allows the fabric to breathe better, regardless of print method, providing a better feel.

AC: The recently introduced SureColor F1070 Hybrid DTG/DTFilm Printer is an especially interesting system. Could you maybe give us an overview of the various features it has to offer?

TC: The SureColor F1070 is a mini version of our mid-production SureColor F2270. For the entry-level model, Epson distilled intuitive, production-level features into a smaller footprint. A few of these features include:

  • Nozzle Verification Technology: The F1070 incorporates a PrecisionCore® Micro TFP® printhead with Nozzle Verification Technology to consistently deliver high-quality prints. This system can identify nozzle clogs and compensate for or correct the issue to help ensure consistent print quality.
  • Auto Height Adjustment: The feature automatically measures garment height during the loading process to automatically raise or lower the garment for optimal print quality without user intervention.
  • Ink Chemistry: Touting renowned UltraChrome® DG2 inks, in a sealed ink system, this ink chemistry is ECO PASSPORT by OKEO-TEX and organic certified, ensuring garments created on the F1070 with UltraChrome DG2 inks are safe for users.

Purpose-built by Epson, the F1070 is part of the Epson ecosystem designed to simplify the printing process. This ecosystem includes compatible software to support an efficient workflow. The F1070 comes equipped with robust Epson Garment Creator 2 software as well as Epson Cloud Solution PORT®,1 Epson’s cloud-based monitoring platform that supports live production monitoring, including output cost estimates and printer utilization statistics. [Ed Note: All features of this system require an active Internet connection and the use of a supported browser.] Additionally, to support a color managed workflow, Epson offers the SD-10 spectrophotometer to help garment decorators accurately identify and recreate colors to ensure customer color satisfaction.

Based in Southern California, blank apparel specialist Lane Seven Apparel first made a name for itself as a manufacturer of high-quality fleecewear. However, it has since gone on to become much, much more, with a wide-ranging product line that is as easy on the environment as it is good looking. Impressions Content Director, Adam Cort, spoke with the company’s Director of Sales, Milissa Gibson, to find out some more about the company and what it’s been up to of late.

Adam Cort: To start out, I wonder if you could give us a brief history of the company, including how and when it was founded, what its underlying philosophy has been, and where the company is now in terms of its capabilities.

Milissa Gibson: Lane Seven started 10 years ago, in 2014, when Nabeel Amin, the founder and CEO, was in the middle of kind of a failing denim business and trying to look around at other spaces with a strong history of product development and fulfillment from a custom-sourcing perspective. Taking a look at the U.S. imprintable market, which is one of the largest in the world, if not the largest, he took a look at fleece, in particular. Ten years ago, if you would have looked at fleece in the industry, it wasn’t up to retail standards…it was (also) expensive, so that by the time you added in print-cost margins and everything else, you were ending up at 40, 50 or 60 dollars, but it wasn’t matching what a 50, 60 or 70-dollar hoodie would look like retail, so customer expectations were not being fulfilled. As far as T-shirts had come in the last 25 years, fleece had really lagged behind, so he came into the market and really brought the principles of retail and innovative fashion into our space. We were the first people, for example, to bring in 3-End fleece, 100-percent cotton facing, which at that time was the perfect thing at the perfect moment as DTG (direct-to-garment) grew and we had this call out for 100-cotton fleece. There wasn’t really much on the market that answered this demand and had the brushed feel that you get with poly. So those were the fundamentals of how we got to where we are today, being really driven by innovation and looking at where the market is headed at the retail level and bringing it into this space. (Ed note: To see the complete line of Lane Seven blank apparel, click here.)

AC: As you mention, since its inception, Lane Seven has been all about pushing the envelope in terms of everything from style to sustainability. Can you give us a few examples of some of the recent initiatives the company has been involved in?

MG: Yeah, the market continues to push and demand that sustainability be at the forefront. The entire industry has evolved, just as Land Seven has, until sustainability has become part of our DNA, and every part of our manufacturing process looks at sustainability and how can we reduce the impact on the environment, whether it be sourcing all of our cotton in-region to reduce our carbon footprint or reducing the amount of water it takes to dye goods—which is the most harmful part of the process. Currently, using sustainable materials, such as recycled polyester, we are making steps to include at minimum 20-percent recycled polyester in all of our poly garments. We also have our Future Fleece, which is 100 sustainable using regenerated yarn. At every step of the process we have some form of sustainability baked in. It’s just how sustainable and what type of story the end user might be looking for. (Ed note: To learn more about Lane Seven’s sustainability efforts, click here.)

AC: I’m thinking initiatives like this don’t happen by accident, but are, in fact, the result of a lot of hard work. How does a major player in the blank apparel market like Lane Seven identify the needs of customers? How do you stay in touch with customers to know what they’re looking for.

MG: I think it happens in a few different ways. One of the biggest ways we can tell from a silhouette and body and fabric standpoint where we need to be is from our private-label division. We have an entire part of our company that does private-label, full-package sourcing, and working with those programs we start to see patterns like, “Oh, it’s leaning more into this silhouette,” which helps us collapse down the time for trends to transition into our industry. It also helps us look at color palettes, which is a big deal. In terms of decorators, whenever we’re developing a new fabric or working on anything, even if it’s 100-percent cotton, we work with our partners to put it through extreme print testing. We work with people like M&R and ROQ and STAHLS’, and we say, “Hey, try to destroy this. Give us the feedback. Tell us what we may or may not encounter.” We also have those same teams work directly with our sales teams to help us stay on the cutting edge of technology and know what’s happening in our customers’ shops. We then take their feedback and give it to the appropriate entities and try to work out a solution. It’s a kind of meeting of minds of what our the customers are saying and what are they buying–which is the real indicator.

AC: Last, but not least, where do you see the blank-apparel industry and Lane Seven, in particular, heading, both in the long and short term, future.

MG: I think we are entering into the ‘90s and early 2000’s in terms of silhouettes—heavy weight, with kind of that big oversized fit, mixed with a juniors fit in women’s fashion. You’re seeing a lot more textures in fabric as well, like in our Nantucket fleece, and you’re seeing a lot more rib out there. I think in the next five years we’re also going to start to see a new evolution as DTF (direct-to-film) has really pushed the industry in a different way than we’ve seen before. You’re seeing decorators, specifically, lean into different substrates that they would never have dealt with before, decorating on shoes, pizza boxes, things they would have never touched before the advantages of DTF expanded their capabilities. So, I think you’re going to start to see some more retail-type fabrics come in that we’ve never really been able to decorate on but that you can decorate now, because you have a flexibility that traditional screen-printing just isn’t capable of. Finally, I think you’re going to continue to see customers demand higher value products. Maybe the order quantities are a bit lower, but the quality of the garment is much, much higher.

Long a leading manufacturer of screen-printing inks Avient currently carries no less than eight different brands: Wilflex, Rutland, Zodiac, Union Ink, Printop, MagnaColours, QCM and Avient Specialty Inks. To find out the latest from the company, which has its roots in the early ‘60s, when screen printing on T-shirts was just beginning to gain in popularity as a means of self-expression, Impressions content director, Adam Cort, spoke with the Avient’s Sr. technical service representative, veteran screen printer John MaGee.

Adam Cort: There appears to be a growing interest in special effect screen-printing inks throughout the textile industry. What is your explanation for this resurgence in effects that were mostly popular in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s?

John MaGee: Screen printing trends tend to be cyclical. I was once told that all-over printing (AOP) comes back into popularity every 10 years. That seems accurate, as we are seeing a return to AOP printing nearly a decade later. This time, there is a different story behind the interest in special effects. Of course, there is the retro appeal. Fifteen years ago, retro prints from popular retail stores in the mall tended to be ultra-soft, distressed and faded prints. However, our current group of new printers likes to pull inspiration from 25 years ago, when puff and thicker prints were more common.

More importantly, screen-printable special effects also help printers compete with digital methods of garment decoration, as those technologies have limited special effect options. Overall, screen printing is still more efficient for mass production, and screen-printable effects will likely still require less handling to apply than a comparable print from digital technology.

The wide range of special effects inks also allows screen printers to experiment with new ideas. Although it may seem impractical at first, Avient Specialty Inks’ Infinite FX Brittle Base is a unique special effect ink that provides a lot of impact. After it is cured, Brittle Base can be stretched to create tiny fatigue cracks, giving the appearance of an old print. The effect isn’t for everyone, but let’s say you want to re-create a t-shirt from the ’60s when shirts were printed with modified house paints. Brittle Base will give you that effect, and it’s satisfying to crack the print.

Avient Specialty Inks Infinite FX Luna Clear is also a popular option. Under regular light, it’s just a clear ink that you can use to seal a print or add some gloss highlights, but under UV black light, it glows. Most printers play it safe and have a message or something simple in the design that will glow, like the eyes of a skull. However, if you print a paisley or a filigree type of image, I suggest filling all the negative space with Luna Clear to create a dynamic print in regular light or even under black light to really pop.

AC: Avient Specialty Inks Infinite FX Nupuff is a much-loved special-effect ink for its lifted effect and excellent stretch properties. Can you share some printing tips specific to Nupuff?

3D apparel screen printing design

There’s nothing like screen printing in 3D to promote a design’s impact. Photo courtesy of Avient

JM: Absolutely. First, it’s key to understand that getting a successful puff print relies on three important factors: heat, time and, most importantly, stencil thickness. The phrase “low and slow” comes to mind when curing a puff print. You need 60 seconds or more of dwell time in the dryer and ten or more seconds at the product’s stated cure temperature. You don’t want to heat the puff too quickly, or it will collapse, and you don’t want to use too much heat, or the puffing agents will swell, blister, and pop, leaving a rough surface. Stencil thickness is also important; I like to see a stencil gasket about the thickness of two business cards or more. This helps deposit more puff ink onto the garment without pushing the ink “into” the weave of the fabric. Once you have that dialed in, you can then engineer the print. I find that printing puff over an under base encourages the puff ink to rise upwards instead of up and outwards. Additionally, it reduces or eliminates fabric “puckering.” Another trick is printing the puff by itself and then printing the color through an additional screen. This prevents the top color (like a Pantone match) from lightening up in tone and allows you to design more dynamic textures for a single top color or several top colors.

AC: Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the screen-printing industry. Can you discuss advancements in sustainability specifically for special effects inks?

JM: One of Avient’s core initiatives is to develop more sustainable products and to operate as an increasingly more environmentally conscious company. For Avient Specialty Inks, this means creating inks with bio-derived content and naturally occurring pigments. Regarding special effects, we are pursuing lower cure options to pair with our low cure ink matching systems and ready-for-use colors. Currently, our clear inks are low cure, and the glitters, shimmers, and metallics are also low or flexible cure. You not only use less energy to cure the ink, but in air-conditioned shops, you will require less cooling in the production area. Don’t forget that by lowering the cure temperature, you are also minimizing the chance of dye migration, ghosting, or damage to the garment. This can translate to less damaged garments ending up in a landfill. So, while environmental sustainability may not be top of mind for a small up-and-coming shop, financial sustainability absolutely should be, and that is another benefit to converting much of our inks offering to flexible cure .

AC: With other technologies edging into the screen-printing industry, like digital printing, where do you see garment screen printing going in the future?

JM: To answer this question, you have to look at the record-pressing industry and the poster-printing segment of our market. Vinyl records have come back hugely and continue to appreciate in value. In fact, phonograph record sales are at the highest in 30 years and are currently out-selling CDs. The same is true for limited edition screen-printed posters. They continue to appreciate due to their rarity and vintage feel. This reflects what we are seeing with screen-printed garments. They will continue to become more valuable because creative artwork always stays in style.

As far as future trends, I hope that augmented reality prints become more common. These are prints that can look differently on a phone or device than they do in person. Right now, you must view augmented reality prints with a phone or smart glasses, but perhaps that will change in the future. Imagine walking past a store window and seeing the employees wearing shirts that display animations, but once you walk into the store past the electronically equipped glass, the prints are standard static images again. I’ve also been excited by smart prints for a while. Smart prints are created with conductive or resistant ink that can measure stretch, heartbeat, impact, or temperature changes across the body.
